A New York jury convicted Pfizer of charges that it illegally acquired counterfeit Viagra.
Pfizer, the world's largest pharmaceutical company, had a jury convicted a man for conspiracy to make and sell counterfeit Viagra, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York said in a news release. It was alleged that at least five other companies had been involved in the counterfeiting of Viagra, including a company that had been acquired in 1996.
The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York and was prosecuted by United States Attorney for the Southern District of California, who prosecuted Pfizer on behalf of the state.
Pfizer paid a $2.2 million fine, ordered a search of a computer system on its website and admitted to illegally making, selling and using counterfeit Viagra. Pfizer was found to have supplied unlicensed and counterfeit versions of Viagra in violation of federal law.
In 2007, an undercover police officer went to Pfizer's New York office and gave a list of information requested by the defendant.
